Previously, in the press conference after the 3-5 loss to Villarreal in round 22 of La Liga, coach Xavi announced that he would resign after the current season ended due to the pressure he had endured recently.
The weak defeat against Real Madrid in the 2024 Spanish Super Cup final or the comeback at home by Villarreal caused “the last drop of water”, pushing Xavi into a situation where he was forced to stop.
However, before no longer sitting in the hot seat, the Spanish strategist also gave advice to the team’s leadership on the issue of choosing his successor at Camp Nou.
“Rafa Marquez is my friend, he is ready to take over the Barca first team. This is completely reasonable but the decision depends on the club president”, Xavi said on GOAL.
Marquez is a former Barca player who played for Blaugrana from 2003-2010. The former Mexican defender is currently working as head coach at Barca B team in the Spanish third division.
But in the same interview, Xavi also gave many warnings to Marquez if the 44-year-old coach was appointed to lead Barca’s first team from next season.
“He will face the same pressures as me or Pep Guardiola before,” Xavi added. “My advice is completely natural. I am always proud to lead Barca. My goal is to help the club win and play the best football. The decision to leave the team comes completely from my heart.”
Commenting on the decision of former student Xavi to leave Barca, coach Pep Guardiola expressed his sympathy.
“Of course it is impossible to compare the pressure I was under in England or Spain,” Guardiola said. “But in Spain, all the difficulties are a thousand times greater. 6 press conferences a week, many matches, the pressure at any other club cannot be compared to when leading Barca.
