The Nerazzurri are struggling in the league this season, 18 points behind leaders Napoli after losing to Spezia on Friday. Christian Vieri, who has been with Inter Milan for six years, believes the team’s difficulties this season are due to the poor finishing ability of the attack.
“Inter create 10 chances per home game. They play well, because they have Dumfries, Dimarco and Barella behind,” said the 49-year-old legend. “They have players who can put Lukaku in a good position. If I was still playing for Inter now, I would win the top scorer title every year.”
Lukaku joined Inter on loan last summer, after spending a miserable first season back at Chelsea, despite being bought for a club-record price of £97.5m.
The Belgian striker’s return to Inter this season has been marred by injury, which has caused him to only make 17 appearances and score just 5 goals. Last month, Inter director Beppe Marotta confirmed that Lukaku would return to Chelsea this summer. He also revealed that the Belgian striker himself wants to join the Nerazzurri in the form of a permanent purchase.
“Will Lukaku stay next year? It’s too early to decide. He’ll be back at Chelsea and we’ll see what happens next,” Marotta told Sky. “Definitely Lukaku wants to stay at Inter. We understand Romelu’s intentions. So we will see if we can negotiate for him to come back here or not.”
Next Tuesday night, Inter will host Porto in the second leg of the round of 16 Champions League. Coach Simone Inzaghi’s side won 1-0 against the Portuguese representative, thanks to Lukaku’s late goal in the first leg at the San Siro.
