Matthijs de Ligt joined Bayern Munich in a £68m deal from Juventus just last year, signing a long-term contract until 2027.
After winning the Serie A and Coppa Italia titles in Turin, the Dutch international was ready to move to Germany, thereby rejecting Chelsea’s interest. Now, after just one season as a starter at Bayern, De Ligt has become the third choice midfielder under coach Thomas Tuchel, after Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano.
The exact reason behind his limited playing time this season has been revealed by tz, a Munich-based tabloid that regularly follows the Bundesliga champions’ matches. Accordingly, the article claims that Tuchel is not satisfied with De Ligt’s playing style. He judged that the Dutch player deployed the ball too slowly and made too many horizontal passes.
Since replacing Julian Nagelsmann in the hot seat at Allianz Arena, Tuchel wants Bayern to play at speed and use more vertical passes. So Kim and Upamecano, both excellent vertical passers, were favored over De Ligt.
