To be able to regain their position in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur has spent heavily to bring in a series of quality contracts. Transfermarkt page revealed that the North London team spent nearly 250 million euros this summer.
However, their plan is not yet complete. Many sources say that Spurs want to promote negotiations to recruit Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher. They believe that this deal is completely feasible because the Blues have just added Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to the squad.
But according to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham cannot achieve this goal because Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has not left.
Specifically sharing on personal Twitter, the Italian journalist said:
“Please understand that Tottenham did not submit any formal offers for Conor Gallagher on the last day of the transfer window. There was interest but they did not send a £40 million (about €47 million) offer to them. Chelsea, despite the rumours.
Negotiations have not progressed as Spurs have not really come close to selling Hojbjerg to Atletico Madrid. Chelsea are delighted to rely on Conor.”
However, in fact, even if Tottenham successfully sold Hojbjerg, maybe Chelsea still refuses to sell Gallagher.
Coach Pochettino has let the young English star start all 4 matches in the Premier League. This is an understandable decision because Lavia is still not ready for her debut. However, that is only part of the problem, because Gallagher personally has also asserted himself with the Blues captain.
After 4 rounds in the Premier League, the 23-year-old player has the second highest average score of the team, only behind Raheem Sterling (statistics from Whoscored).
Notably, Gallagher’s pass accuracy rate is up to 91.4%, higher than Enzo (90.7%). On average, each match, he creates an average of 2 interceptions, 1 clearance and 1 block of the opponent’s passing situation.
This is also the reason Pochettino trusts the English star. However, Gallagher will need to maintain such performances throughout the season.
Remember that Chelsea spent more than 62 million euros (according to Transfermarkt) to get the Southampton star’s signature. Therefore, it will not be easy for them to let Lavia sit out.
The 19-year-old player showed impressive performances last season, promising to become the perfect piece to create a quality midfield trio with two other blockbusters, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.
Because of that, Gallagher must make more efforts if he wants to ensure the main kick.
At his age, Gallagher needs to play regularly to continue developing his career. He proved himself at Crystal Palace, but Chelsea is a high-level team. Therefore, the requirements and competition will be much higher.
But if the 23-year-old continues to score points with Pochettino, Not only Lavia but also Caicedo or Enzo will have to be wary of their position because efficiency is what Chelsea put first, not flashy signings.
