Chelsea have said they are ready to activate Fernandez’s £106m release clause. Despite growing speculation surrounding Enzo’s future, the 21-year-old featured in last night’s 3-0 loss to Braga.
Fernandez was substituted in the 89th minute and was almost in tears as he sat on the bench late in the game.
Asked if the midfielder had played his last game for the club, Schmidt said: “In my opinion, Enzo played well today. I don’t know if that will be Enzo’s last match or not. He’s a great player, since coming to Benfica he’s been playing great football.”
“And even as a human, he completely identifies with the club. As I said before, in football sometimes things happen and players have to make decisions. Let’s see. what will happen in the coming weeks.”
