After a disastrous start in Ligue 1, Olympique Lyonnais decided to terminate the contract with coach Laurent Blanc today (September 11, Vietnam time).
“Olympique Lyonnais and Laurent Blanc have decided to end their partnership from today according to mutual agreement,” the club’s announcement said.
In addition to Laurent Blanc, his assistant coaches Franck Passi and Philippe Lambert also had to pack up and leave Groupama Stadium. The club also thanked Blanc and his coaching staff for their dedication and professionalism during their time working at Lyon.
Immediately after making the decision to fire Laurent Blanc, Lyon announced that the team’s training sessions the next day would be led by one of his assistants Jean-François Vulliez, with the support of two former players, Sonny Anderson and Jérémie Bréchet.
Lyon is currently looking for a successor to Laurent Blanc. According to some sources, potential candidates include Gennaro Gattuso (Italy), Oliver Glasner (Austria) and Habib Beye (France). Lyon will continue to compete in Ligue 1 next Sunday, when they welcome newly promoted team Le Havre.
After the first 4 rounds of Ligue 1, Laurent Blanc’s Olympique Lyonnais only got 1 point, ranking at the bottom of the rankings. The 1-4 loss to Paris Saint-Germain at home on September 4 (Vietnam time) was considered the final straw. Many fans and experts asked the club’s board of directors to fire the former France coach. Even the 57-year-old coach himself admitted that perhaps the team should “change coach”.
In addition to professional issues, Laurent Blanc is said to have conflicts with his American owners. Businessman John Textor, after completing the acquisition of the club in July 2023, once asked Blanc to ‘stop arguing with the media’ and stated ‘Blanc knows that he will be fired if he does not succeed. ‘And finishing the season outside the European places would be a failure.’
Laurent Blanc, a former player and coach of the French team, was appointed head coach of Lyon in October 2022, replacing Peter Bosz. During 11 months working at Groupama Stadium, Blanc helped Lyon improve its performance last season, when the team ranked third in the second half of the season. However, Lyon was unable to win tickets to the European Cup for the second time in a row since reaching the Champions League semi-finals in 2020.
