The NBA has issued a notice to fine Grant Williams $20,000 for punching the ball into a basketball post as the game between the Boston Celtics and the Golden State Warriors was coming to an end.
The situation happened when the fourth half was less than 2 minutes and Grant Williams’ Boston Celtics were leading 101 – 118. When interim coach Joe Mazzulla announced the technical time-out, the ball was in Williams’ hands. Instead of letting go, Williams threw the ball towards the basket, when the ball bounced back to him, the 24-year-old continued to punch the ball and hit the backboard.

Referee Scott Foster, who was standing nearby, immediately penalized Williams for a technical foul and sent him off the field. Williams was initially confused as to why he was sent off, but Foster promptly explained to him that the NBA has a rule that throwing or kicking a ball into a basketball post will result in immediate dismissal. .

The Boston Celtics were unable to turn the tide in the final minutes and lost on aggregate 107 – 123.
Owning a height of 1m98, Grant Williams used to play for the University of Tennessee’s volunteer basketball team. Williams rose to fame when he was placed 22nd overall by the Celtics in the 2019 NBA draft draft and had a stellar performance in the 2022 NBA Finals season.
