Neymar has surpassed the legendary Pele to become Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 2 goals in the second half when the Selecao won 5-1 against Bolivia in the 2026 World Cup qualifying round in South America.
Neymar entered the match with the same 77 goals as Pele. He scored the first goal in the 61st minute, before sealing the match’s result in extra time. It was Neymar’s 79th goal in his 125th match for his country.
Neymar said after the match: “I am so happy, there are no words to describe this. I never thought I would achieve this record.”
However, Neymar said that that achievement did not help him surpass the great Pele, who died of cancer at the age of 82: “I want to say that this record does not mean I am better than him.” [Pele] or any national team player. I always wanted to write my story in the national team shirt and today I did it.”
The former Barcelona striker recently moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.
