Al Hilal’s Odion Ighalo was chosen to replace Ronaldo for the striker position. The former MU player has been outstanding this season, scoring 19 goals in 27 matches, only 2 goals behind the top scorer of the Saudi Arabia league, Abderrazak Hamdallah of Al Ittihad.
The remaining two spots in attack belong to Al Fateh’s Firas Al-Buraikan with 17 goals in 30 games and Al Wahda’s Mourad Batna with 10 goals in 25 appearances. Quite surprising that the top scorer Hamdallah did not have a name.
“Personally Ronaldo had the worst season of his career,” Marca described. CR7 has a second consecutive season without a title. Before CR7 arrived, Al Nassr was 8 points ahead of the chasing team. At the end of the season, they lost the championship when they let Al Ittihad lead 5 points back.
Al Nassr was eliminated by Al Ittihad in the Saudi Super Cup a few days after Ronaldo arrived and lost to a relegation-threatened Al Wehda in the King’s Cup. The team based in Riyadh showed an unconvincing kick despite having Ronaldo in the squad.
Ronaldo was eliminated but two of his teammates at Al Nassr were selected. Luiz Gustavo was placed in a three-man midfield alongside Al Ittihad’s Romarinho and Al Taawoun’s Kaku. Meanwhile, Al Nassr’s Konan is considered the best left-back in the tournament.
The remaining three positions of the defensive quartet belong to Ahmed Hegazi, Ahmed Sharahili and Madallah Al-Olayan. Marcelo Grohe was selected for the goalkeeper position. All four of these players are from Al Ittihad, the champion team this season.
Next season’s Saudi Pro League promises to become more competitive and exciting. Karim Benzema has just left Real Madrid to go to the Middle East to play football. N’Golo Kante, Sergio Ramos or Sergio Busquets are expected to be the next names to appear in the number one tournament in Saudi Arabia.
