Barca is currently hunting for a new coach after Xavi Hernandez announced he would leave the team at the end of the season. Barca Atletic coach Rafael Marquez at one time seemed like a good replacement for the role, but that no longer seems to be the case.
Marquez has been offered the position of interim coach until the end of the season if Xavi resigns. The Mexican legend admitted that he would not be able to refuse this opportunity and that it was a naive and ill-timed comment.
Cadena SER says that Marquez lost points in just a few weeks. According to their information, President Joan Laporta told journalists in December that Marquez was ‘ready to take over from Xavi’ if necessary. However, that feeling has since changed and they no longer consider him their top choice.
Marquez replaced Sergi Barjuan last summer to sit in the hot seat at Barca’s youth team. He brought Barca Atletic to sixth place despite losing many players for the first team. However, with the recent incident, he needs to be able to handle the media better.
