Currently, Mbappe’s future is becoming a big question mark. He is only tied to PSG until the summer of 2024, and not long ago announced that he would not activate the extension of one year with the club. The French striker’s intention is to play again for PSG in the 2023/24 season, before leaving on a free form next summer, with a destination Real Madrid waiting.
Most recently, president Al-Khelaifi spoke out about the future of Mbappe – the number 1 star of PSG at the moment. He said: “Of course we don’t want Mbappe to move on a free basis in 2024. Our strategy is very clear. If Mbappe wants to stay, he has to sign a new contract.
We don’t want to lose the best player in the world without earning a dime. This is impossible. Mbappe said he would not leave on a free basis. If he changes his mind, it’s not my fault.”
At this moment, PSG is in a dilemma. If they accept to sell Mbappe right this summer, they will not be able to collect the same amount of money as 2 years ago because he only has 1 year of contract left. Remember in 2021, Real Madrid once offered 200 million euros for the reigning World Cup runner-up, but PSG refused.
On the contrary, if Mbappe is to play the whole 2023/24 season without signing a new contract, PSG will lose him in the summer of next year. Currently, Real Madrid and Mbappe are said to be “conspiring” to implement this plan. If this happens, Mbappe will pocket a large amount of money from Los Blancos, because the La Liga representative will not pay a transfer fee to recruit him.
The only way for PSG is probably to accept to sell Mbappe at a price below expectations, rather than losing everything. Of course, that amount will certainly not make up for the 180 million euros they paid Monaco to buy Mbappe outright in the summer of 2018.
