Messi won the World Cup with his national team for the third time in their history, the first time in 36 years. The 35-year-old is currently in his hometown of Rosario celebrating with his loved ones.
The striker welcomed the Mayor of Funes – Roly Santacroce – into his home to receive an Honorary Citizen plaque for his World Cup feats. And when he accepted the award, Messi had a special message for his supporters – thank them and sorry for not making it public.

Messi is celebrated as a saint in his hometown.
He said: “Well, we want to say hello to all the people of Funes, Rosario in general. We want to thank you for the love you have always shown us, especially at this time when I am just got back from the World Cup.”
“Also forgive us for sometimes it’s hard to meet people, we want to be with family and friends for a few days and sometimes that’s complicated.”
