Busquets is out of contract at Camp Nou at the end of the season and could leave as a free agent in the summer of 2023. However, as reported by Diario Sport, the midfielder has even considered leaving Barcelona in January to move to MLS Soccer League team, Inter Miami.
Busquets is about to leave Barca.
The Catalan giants of course want to keep Busquets, but that is not easy, especially when the club is in financial difficulty.
Midfielder Pedri said: “I want him to continue, Sergio is an important piece. But Frenkie de Jong could be a good replacement for him. Frenkie played in that position with the Netherlands in the World Cup.”
Pedri is not the first to suggest De Jong replace Busquets. Former Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal has previously said that the former Ajax midfielder plays his best football in Busquets’ position.
De Jong is not the only player in Barca’s plan to replace Busquets. The Catalan side are said to be interested in signing Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves or Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.
