Lyon has confirmed parting ways with coach Fabio Grosso. The Italian strategist only managed 7 matchesthis was the shortest “reign” in the club’s history.
Grosso took over the hot seat from Laurent Blanc in mid-September when Lyon was in 16th place and without a win since the beginning of the season. Grosso could not “revive” this traditionally rich team, although they did get their first victory of the season, defeating Rennes on November 12, before losing again to Lille last weekend.
This is an unexpected record for a Lyon coach since Sylvinho’s time (11 matches as Lyon coach), set in 2019.
In addition to saying goodbye to Grosso, assistants such as Raffaelle Longo, Francesco Vaccariello, Vittorio Carello and Mauro Carretta will also leave the team.
Pierre Sage, the academy coach, will take over on a temporary basis at Lyon and will lead the club in their match against Lens next Saturday. Jérémie Bréchet, Jean-Françoios Vulliez and Rémy Vercoutre will be Sage’s assistants.
According to RMC Sport, Bruno Genesio, Jorge Sampaoli and Igor Tudor are all competing to become the new captain of Lyon, a team that has only 7 points in Ligue I and is at the bottom of the table.
