On the evening of July 8 (Vietnam time), David de Gea announced his farewell to Man Utd. The Old Trafford team decided not to renew the contract, so the Spaniard had no choice but to leave.
Initially, the Red Devils reached an agreement with De Gea for a new contract with a significantly reduced salary. However, Man Utd changed his mind. They asked De Gea to take a deeper pay cut. The 32-year-old goalkeeper did not agree, so the negotiations fell into a deadlock.
De Gea said: “I just want to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters.
I want to express my gratitude and great love for the past 12 years. We have achieved a lot since dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. I’m incredibly proud to wear this shirt, to lead the team, to represent the biggest club in the world, it’s an honor only available to a few lucky players.
An unforgettable and successful time since I came here. I don’t think that leaving Madrid as a boy we will achieve what we did together.
Now is the right time to take on a new challenge, to push yourself back in the new environment. Manchester will always be in my heart, Manchester has shaped me and will never leave me.”
Coach Erik ten Hag said: “It takes great quality and personality to reach the level of playing for Manchester United. To do that 545 games in 12 years is an exceptional achievement, especially as a goalkeeper. , where every match puts you in the spotlight.
Personally, I am grateful for De Gea’s 25 clean sheets last season and for his overall contribution on the pitch during my first year at the club. All the players and staff send De Gea their best wishes for the next phase in his stellar career.”
Since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011, De Gea has made 545 appearances for United with 190 clean sheets, all club records for a goalkeeper.
With Man Utd, he won the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League and two Carabao Cups. De Gea also won the Premier League Golden Glove award twice, receiving the team’s Player of the Year award four times.
Nevertheless, De Gea is clearly no longer suitable for the change of Man Utd. Coach Ten Hag needed a goalkeeper who could play with his feet, but De Gea could not provide it. That’s why Man Utd no longer wants to keep this veteran goalkeeper. Currently, Saudi Arabia can be a potential destination for De Gea.
In the opposite direction, Man Utd has reached an agreement to recruit Andre Onana. According to British media, Man Utd spent 55 million euros on Onana, a record price for the goalkeeper position of the Old Trafford team.
After all, goodbye De Gea after 12 years full of ups and downs with Man Utd.
