Goal: Elche: Fidel (41′)

Atletico Madrid unexpectedly lost 0-1 to the relegated team Elche. This result is considered official confirmation that Diego Simeone’s team is no longer able to compete for the La Liga title with Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The top team Barcelona will win the La Liga title tomorrow morning if they win against their city rivals Espanyol because Atletico, who are ranked in third place, like Real Madrid, have no chance to catch up with them.

Atletico, who have been in impressive form since the World Cup, were inexplicably defeated by bottom team Elche, who had won only three previous victories in a disastrous season.

Fidel Chaves broke the deadlock in the 41st minute, when Atletico goalkeeper Ivo Grbic made a mistake from a throw-in, giving the Spaniard a chance to open the scoring.

Minutes later, both teams created many scoring opportunities, but neither team could add more goals. With the result, Atletico fell to third place with two points behind defending champions Real Madrid, who beat Getafe on Saturday.

Earlier, Valencia won an important late win over Celta Vigo to temporarily climb to 14th place, 3 points above the relegation zone.

Line-up: Elche (4-4-2): Badia; Palacios, Bigas (Magallan 84′), Clerc, Blanco (Milla 67′); Morente, Donald, Gumbau, Fidel (Raul Guti 84′); Nteka (Josan 67′), Boye (Ponce 90′).Atletico (3-5-2): Grbic; Gimenez, Witsel, Hermoso (Reguillon 61′); Molina, De Paul (Barrios Rivas 61′), Koke (Dominguez 82′), Lemar (Correa 54′), Carrasco; Morata, Griezmann.
