Who is Kobbie Mainoo?
Midfielder Mainoo was coached by coach Erik ten Hag to train in the first team of MU this summer. The Dutch strategist highly appreciates this 18-year-old young talent. Most likely, Mainoo will be the main kick in the friendly match of the Red Devils against Leeds on July 12. Mainoo is 18 years old this year. This young talent has been with MU since he was a 9-year-old boy. He was signed a professional contract by the Manchester City team in May last year and quickly caught the eye of coach Ten Hag.
MU fans are no stranger to the name Mainoo. Last season, he was given a special chance by coach Ten Hag to play in the first team of MU. Specifically, he made his debut on January 10, the day MU defeated Charlton 3-0 in the English League Cup earlier this year. More than a month later, Mainoo continued to make his debut in the English Premier League, when he came on from the bench (replacing Marcel Sabitzer) in the Red Devils’ 3-0 win over Leicester.
What is Mainoo’s strong point?
Mainoo is considered a player with extremely full physical strength. He can “sweep” across the field during the match and once made senior Fred fall in awe. If coached by the “infamous” senior Casemiro, the 18-year-old could soon become one of the best central midfielders in the English Premier League.
Mainoo not only plays like a “man without lungs”, but also possesses individual technique and good tactical thinking. His passing skills are also excellent. Besides, when needed, Mainoo is also ready to approach the opponent’s goal to launch shots. Thanks to those advantages, this midfielder can also play well in the role of an attacking midfielder.
Versatility is what Coach Ten Hag likes most about Mainoo. He can play in any position in midfield, even being tested as a striker. In any role, the 18-year-old also received praise from the coaches.
What did they say about Mainoo?
Mainoo’s potential is huge. While witnessing this young talent play, former player Paul Scholes exclaimed: “I see my image in the way this boy plays. He’s a very good guy!” According to Scholes, Mainoo can become an excellent box-to-box midfielder in the not too distant future.
And former center-back Rio Ferdinand could not help but give Mainoo “winged” words when he saw him practice with his seniors in the MU first team: “I am very impressed with Mainoo. If coach Ten Hag allows him to play regularly, the 2023/24 season will be his breakthrough season. It’s a real talent.”
What achievements did Mainoo have?
In the 2021/22 season, Mainoo plays an important role in helping MU’s U18 team win the FA Cup youth tournament. Next season, he won MU’s Best Young Player award in the 2022/23 season – a prize that seniors like Paul Scholes or Marcus Rashford used to own.
Mainoo has been called up consecutively to England U17, U18 and U19 teams. Due to being a player of Ghanaian origin, the midfielder is being courted by the Football Federation of this African country. Facing that situation, coach Gareth Southgate is intending to urgently summon Mainoo to England, avoiding the situation that football in the foggy country can lose a precious gem.
