MU negotiates Cody Gakpo but Dutch team-mate Memphis Depay is more likely to become Ronaldo’s replacement at Old Trafford, because of the transfer fee.
According to the Spanish newspaper AS, MU is a good candidate to sign Memphis Depay from Barca.
The Dutch star was linked to move to Chelsea and Juventus in the summer transfer, but in the end Depay chose to stay at the Nou Camp.
However, Barca is now ready to sell Memphis Depay for only £ 4.3 million and MU is considering bringing the 28-year-old striker back to Old Trafford.
Depay used to play for MU (2015-2017) when coach Louis Van Gaal was in charge of the team but was unsuccessful when he only scored 2 goals after 33 appearances.
However, he later shone in a Lyon shirt, being one of the best attacking players in Ligue 1, always having a place in the Dutch national team.
In World Cup 2022Memphis Depay has just scored against the US team to join the Netherlands in the quarter-finals against Argentina after a 3-1 victory.
MU currently lacks the striker position after deciding to terminate the contract with Ronaldo early because of stigmatizing the club, teammates and coach. With only Rashford and Martial injured, able to play as a central striker, Erik ten Hag needs to bring in a striker in the winter transfer – January 2023.
Sources said that MU entered into negotiations with PSV’s Cody Gakpo, but the current transfer fee is a problem because the player’s price has skyrocketed thanks to his impressive performance in the 2022 World Cup.
If in the summer MU could buy for about 40 million euros, now that number is at 60 million euros and will increase even more once Gakpo and the Netherlands continue to go far in Qatar.
Therefore, according to AS, the possibility of Memphis Depay coming to MU in January 2023 is more realistic than Cody Gakpo.
