Mount signed a contract with a salary of £250,000-a-week at Old Trafford until 2028 with the option of a one-year extension, after United agreed to pay £55m to Chelsea plus £5m in add-ons.
Mount was also honored to wear the number 7 shirt – the famous shirt at Old Trafford that once belonged to legends George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo – after talking with coach Erik ten Hag.
The Dutch coach thinks that Mount, who is a dynamic player, fits his philosophy very well. Therefore, the Red Devils feel that the number 7 shirt for him is completely deserved.
The England international, after saying he was grateful for the opportunity to wear the MU shirt, was pictured taking part in his first training session on Friday morning. Mount was seen wearing a white MU training shirt and a pair of black shorts during training at Carrington. Mount smiled brightly as he stepped onto the field, then practiced passing the ball with his teammates and practicing heading.
Mount was particularly friendly with Lisandro Martinez, as the two hugged and posed for pictures before their first pre-season training session at Carrington began. Mount was also seen playing ghost games with Toby Collyer and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Mount will certainly face immense pressure having cost the club £60m and wearing the number 7 shirt, making him the 10th player to be awarded the shirt. Many illustrious stars have struggled with the number 7 shirt at Old Trafford in recent years including Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay, Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia.
However, the former Chelsea midfielder insists he is up for the challenge. After signing with the new club, he said: “Leaving the club where you grew up is never easy, but MU will present an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career. After Playing against them, I know how strong the team I’m on is and I can’t wait to be a part of the team’s drive to win big titles.”
“One can see that the club has made great strides under Erik ten Hag. Meeting the manager and discussing his plans, I couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming season and ready for the challenges. The challenge is expected to be very difficult here. I am extremely ambitious. I know how great it feels to win big titles and what it takes to achieve it. I will give everything. to experience the title again at MU.”
Going to MU, Mount will be the right piece for a three-man midfield, which already has two world-class stars Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. United are still keen to bring in a new striker and goalkeeper this summer. Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund remains the main target and is expected to cost around £50m. In addition, the Red Devils have submitted a second offer of around £43 million for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.
