At this time a year ago, few thought Anthony Martial would be staying at Old Trafford beyond the summer of 2022. But that’s what happened. Even Erik ten Hag once identified the French star as the main striker of the Red Devils.
With 7 goals and 2 assists after only 729 minutes of meager, inconsistent play, Martial showed extremely high efficiency when entering the field. Every time he appears, the 27th striker shows that he has all the skills that Ten Hag wants in the central striker position. The ability to play with his back, keep the ball, build a play or finish the former AS Monaco star is too great.
However, the problem is not new, that is Martial cannot keep fit to play the leading role in Man United’s attack. Due to five separate injuries, he has only played 17 games this season. Ten Hag gradually grew impatient and was forced to rush to recruit Wout Weghorst in January.
Attack is a big concern of Man United this season, even when there is Cristiano Ronaldo. And come the next summer transfer window, recruiting a striker is a must for the Old Trafford team. England captain Harry Kane is currently in the sights of the Red Devils to replace the temporary contract. There is also information that they are ready to sell Martial to reinvest.
Man United have a clear purchase plan, but the move from Frenkie de Jong to Casemiro, after withdrawing in the Adrien Rabiot deal, shows that they have enough flexibility. If the Old Trafford team gets Kane or Victor Osimhen – two very difficult and expensive deals – plus a backup plan, it will make sense to let Martial leave. Otherwise, the 27-year-old will still be the perfect backup plan for Kane himself. Everyone knows how ‘spicy’ negotiating with the two presidents Daniel Levy and Aurelio De Laurentiis is.
Ten Hag appreciates Martial and they respect each other, to the point where United could give a last chance to a player who has spent eight years at the club. When Rashford is injured, Martial will have the opportunity to show himself in a very important time of the season like the present. If he does well, he deserves to be kept by the club for many more years. Martial could even be the man Ten Hag relies on to ensure a smoother transition at Old Trafford, even as a backup.
Martial must thank Ten Hag for prolonging his career at Man United. Now is the time for the French striker to repay that favor in the short and medium term.
