One of the big influences on Reus’ decision to give up the captaincy was the “nightmare” against Mainz in the final round of the 2022/23 Bundesliga. When everyone believed that Dortmund would end Bayern’s dominance to win the German championship, they let Mainz draw 2-2 at Signal Iduna Park. This result together with Bayern’s close 2-1 victory over Cologne means that the Bavarian Gray Lobster is crowned champion again.
More importantly, Reus is one of the players who performed the most in the aforementioned “disaster”. And, that match always haunted him, causing him to have nightmares every night for over a month.
“Hello Dortmund fans. It is very important to me to tell you one thing directly. I’ve had a lot to think about during my vacation and I’ve decided to hand over the captain’s armband.
I have informed this decision to coach Edin Terzic and CEO Sebastian Kehl. I am very honored and proud to wear this prestigious captain’s armband for the past 5 years.
Thank you all for your support over the past 5 years. I also wish Sebastian and Edin to find an excellent successor. And I am sure they will succeed,” Reus announced on Dortmund’s homepage.
Joining Dortmund in 2012, Reus was first handed the captain’s armband by the coach of the Ruhr region at the beginning of the 2018/19 season. Since then, Reus has always been the captain of Dortmund. In April 2023, he extended a year with the club and it is likely that after the end of the 2023/24 season, Reus will say goodbye to Signal Iduna Park.
