Manchester United has encountered a lot of trouble since the beginning of the season. In fact, the Red Devils continue to show fluctuating performance. Most recently, they lost 0-1 to Newcastle United in round 14 of the Premier League. However, there are still a few glimmers of light at the end of the Old Trafford tunnel.
Alejandro Garnacho impressed and silenced Goodison Park with a goal. The young Argentinian star followed up with another goal against Galatasaray to confirm his position in the starting lineup. In contrast, Rasmus Hojlund has not opened an account in the Premier League.
And then there’s Kobbie Mainoo. This player plays confidently in the midfield. If developed in the right direction, Mainoo could be the solution for Man Utd’s midfield in the near future.
Regardless of the short-term results, or even the competition, the future looks bright for Man United and they have three young talents to build the team around. However, as things stand, Mainoo has something that Hojlund in particular can benefit from in its own development.
Man United spent £72 million on Hojlund this summer. That price somewhat adds pressure, although everyone fully understands that the Danish player must have time to hone his playing style.
It can be seen that the 20-year-old does not have suitable satellites around to help him – unlike Mainoo. Mainoo is the versatile midfielder United expect. This 18-year-old player can attack, defend and somewhat show value when on the field.
On the training field, Mainoo has everything he needs in addition to the support of Erik ten Hag and the coaching staff. Casemiro will naturally be the right choice when developing Mainoo’s defensive steel, while Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes are ready to hone this talent’s attacking instincts.
Mainoo has many seniors playing the same position to rely on and ask for advice. However, Hojlund does not have that luxury as Anthony Martial even struggles to earn a starting spot in the squad. Recruiting another experienced striker is clearly necessary at the present time and for future ambitions.
Man United surprised many by signing Wout Weghorst on loan in the January 2023 transfer window. Things never go as planned for the Dutchman.
He tried his best to score but failed. Coach Ten Hag understands they have to bring in another striker. That’s when they spent 72 million pounds on Hojlund. But with what’s going on, Man Utd will probably have to urgently add an experienced striker in January 2024.
