“Juventus football club can confirm that we have not made a withdrawal from the Super League project. But we will start negotiations between the three clubs (Barcelona and Real Madrid – PV) about Juventus’ desire to leave. from the Super League (ESL)”, the Juventus homepage announced.
“The idea that Juventus acted like this because of threats from the European Football Federation (UEFA) is groundless,” the representative from Italy emphasized.
Juventus’ decision deals a blow to the ambition to restart the ESL project. This idea was initially met with huge criticism. Most of the founding members, including six major Premier League teams, had to immediately withdraw from the plan.
In February, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus were reported to have contacted more than 50 clubs to inform them of adjustments to the European Super League compared to two years ago.
They want to probe public opinion, especially the loyal fan base of teams in Serie A or La Liga, clubs that increasingly feel financially inferior to the Premier League. The introduction of a new super league could help the rest of European football narrow the money gap with the Premier League.
Telegraph said that the top 6 Premier League clubs are not opposed to ESL and are ready to participate if given the opportunity. But they do not want to take any risks in the domestic arena after facing backlash from the British public two years ago. The British government then threatened to severely punish the top 6 Premier League clubs for participating in the ESL project.
This comeback of ESL is more skillful in terms of communication as they target the majority of European clubs with financial problems. But Juventus’ new statement made the project continue to fall into a deadlock.
Juventus is currently facing many problems when it is found guilty of inflating transfer fees to raise fake investment capital, making the club’s assets much larger than its real value. FIGC decided to deduct 10 points from Juventus. After receiving the penalty, Max Allegri’s teachers and students fell to 7th and did not have a place to attend the European Cup next season.
