According to The Telegraph, Arsenal is ‘intending’ to recruit 17-year-old star Jorrel Hato of Ajax Amsterdam. Mikel Arteta is said to want to strengthen his defensive options and Hato would certainly provide versatility down the line. The young defender is considered one of the hottest prospects in Europe at the moment and it is no surprise that various top clubs have expressed an interest.
Before anything continues, some questions need to be answered. Is the 2006-born talent ready to move to the Premier League and can he solve Arsenal’s defensive problems?
Hato has admitted that following in Jurrien Timber’s footsteps would be a ‘dream’ after his former team-mate moved to the Emirates Stadium last summer. The defender became the youngest captain to appear for Ajax and he is the fifth youngest player to ever represent the Dutch national team.
Jorrel Hato is Ajax’s most consistent player this season, participating in every minute of the Amsterdam club’s competition. Hato played a huge role in the home team’s turnaround as they rose from bottom of the Eredivisie table to fifth place. The midfielder has also played all six matches in the Europa League this season. He is yet to suffer any injuries in his career, which will be a key factor in Arsenal’s pursuit.
Everything Jorrel Hato has experienced so far shows that the defender can fully integrate into a Premier League team. His physicality and aerial ability are outstanding, along with his leadership qualities that are a source of motivation for any club. Hato can play in the center of defense or left back. What we often see Mikel Arteta do is shuffle the positions of his defenders, shifting players like Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ben White and Jakub Kiwior to different areas of the backline.
Arsenal have conceded 21 goals in the Premier League this season, allowing Luton to score three times, Chelsea and Tottenham both scoring twice. Jorrel Hato is part of an Ajax team that has conceded a lot of goals this season, but his huge strength is his contribution to goals. Hato was excellent at playing the ball out from the back, and he even had a goal and an assist himself.
With only 18 months left on his current contract, we can see Arsenal soon making a move to recruit Jorrel Hato. A January move seems unlikely, but give this lad another six to seven months in Amsterdam and he’ll be ready for North London. Hato has shown the right qualities for a Premier League side, but certain weaknesses in his game could be improved. Transfermarkt values Hato at around 22 million euros, but Ajax will certainly ask for more than double when a club like Arsenal comes in contact.
