After suffering a minor injury in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Lionel Messi was rested in the confrontation with Bolivia. Returning to Miami, El Pulga continued to sit out in Inter Miami’s 5-2 loss to Atlanta United last weekend.
With 100% recovery, Messi will likely return to the squad to welcome Toronto on September 21. Notably, the away team also expects the Argentinian superstar to put his shoes on the field.
Messi is likely to return to MLS in the middle of this week.
“I think Messi will be ready to play, because he will play again in front of the fans. And also because they can’t drop any more points. They need points… we really need it too. That’s why I said this will be an interesting match for us and the fans,” said Victor Vazquez, who spent time at La Masia with Messi.
Terry Dunfield, Toronto’s interim coach, expressed interest in the prospect of facing Messi: “We hope to meet Messi. I think since he’s been in the league, his work has been incredible. Not just personally but also how he raised the stock of Inter Miami and then the teammates around him but also the stock of the league.”
The match between Inter Miami and Toronto will take place at 6:30 a.m. on September 21 (Vietnam time).
