El Shaarawy had an excellent performance, as a striker supporting Romelu Lukaku. The Italian international provided two assists and almost scored with a shot that hit the crossbar.
Mourinho uses El Shaarawy very skillfully.
Mourinho said: “He can play anywhere. El Shaarawy is a very useful player for us. He can play as a full-back, winger, or second striker. That is very important for us, in a squad lacking depth and players who are injured.
Slavia expected us to play Belotti alongside Lukaku, but their right-back played wide. So I think it would be better to let El Shaarawy play. He almost scored a beautiful goal, if the ball hadn’t hit the crossbar. I took him out because having time to rest is a luxury for any Roma player at the moment.”
With Paulo Dybala injured, El Shaarawy and Lukaku will likely continue to be used by Mourinho against Inter on Sunday.
