Ange Postecoglou has provided an update on Micky Van de Ven and James Maddison after they were both forced off the field due to injury in Tottenham’s 4-1 loss to Chelsea. Spurs ended the match with just nine people on the field after Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie received red cards.
Spurs took an early lead after Dejan Kulusevski’s shot. The match then turned into complete chaos when the Blues had two goals disallowed before being awarded a penalty, after Romero fouled Enzo Fernandez.
The Spurs defender was sent off the field after the foul. Cole Palmer scored from the penalty spot to equalize for Mauricio Pochettino’s team. Postecoglou then lost Van de Ven through injury after the Dutch defender suffered a hamstring problem.
Maddison was let off the field at the same time after hurting his ankle, right before Van de Ven fell down clutching his leg. Udogie then also had to leave the field in the second half after receiving a second yellow card for fouling Raheem Sterling.
Chelsea continued to punish Spurs when Nicolas Jackson scored a hat-trick. Tottenham Hotspur fans appreciated their team’s efforts, but in the end, Postecoglou’s side still finished second on the Premier League table, one point behind Manchester City.
Speaking after the match, the Spurs manager provided an update on Maddison and Van de Ven.
“He [Maddison] hit his ankle,” Postecoglou said.
“We had already lost someone. It made sense to make some changes at that point.”
Regarding Van de Ven’s injury, Postecoglou said: “It’s too early. For Micky, it was a pretty serious injury“.
