No one was mentioned as much as Harry Maguire in England’s 3-1 victory over host Scotland, which took place at Hampden Park last Tuesday night.
He got positive results, but personally those were not easy moments for Maguire.
When he came on as a substitute at the beginning of the second half, Maguire became the focus of ridicule from Scottish fans. They hurled the harshest words whenever he received the ball.
Things got even worse for the MU defender, when he blocked Scotland’s ball and scored an own goal.
Not only the fans in the stands, but even the Hampden Park spokesman took advantage of the opportunity to mock Maguire.
“I can solve this problem,” Maguire responded to the attack from Scottish fans. “I don’t worry about such things.”
Why did things go in such a bad direction? No one can give the answer. The past few years have been an unpleasant time for Maguire, as he had to face a lot of mental pressure.
“I’ve been through a lot in a few years, having time as captain of MU. You have to take responsibility and there are many things that come with it, both good and bad,” Maguire explained. “But it is a great honor,” he emphasized.
From MU to the England team, almost everyone is against Maguire. The only exception is Gareth Southgate, who always protects him and includes him in his preparations for EURO 2024.
Maguire’s new opportunity
The 2022-23 season is a time of failure for Maguire. He only started 8 matches in the Premier League, becoming Erik ten Hag’s 5th choice for central defender positions, after Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof.
That hasn’t changed at the start of this season. The former Leicester player only played 23 minutes for MU, while participating in the full 90 minutes of the match against Ukraine in the EURO 2024 qualifiers.
When Maguire came on to replace Lisandro Martinez in the match against Arsenal in round 4 of the Premier League, the audience at Emirates Stadium did not miss the opportunity to mock him.
“Every time I practice or compete, I always give my best,” Maguire calmly said as he entered the preparation process for the expected difficult match with Brighton (9:00 p.m. September 16).
Last summer, MU stripped Maguire of the captaincy and agreed to sell him to rival West Ham. The case collapsed at the last minute.
“We did not reach an agreement on a transfer. The team is happy for me to stay and I am happy to fight for my position,” the 30-year-old midfielder explained.
MU lost two midfielders Lisandro Martinez and Varane due to injury. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are also undergoing treatment.
This opens up opportunities for Maguire. He will partner with Lindelof to shield Andre Onana’s goal against Brighton’s Premier League scoring attack.
“The first weeks of the season were difficult because the schedule was small and the coach did not choose me. In the near future, we will have a thicker schedule and I am sure I will play a lot,” Maguire was optimistic. You must know how to seize opportunities for yourself.
