On the evening of September 22 (Hanoi time), the Laver Cup organizers announced the schedule of the first competition day on September 23. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal represented the European team in the final doubles match of the day against Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe (world team).
“Express train” previously confirmed that it will only participate in the doubles content at Laver Cup without playing singles due to injury and lack of physical strength. The match with Nadal is also Federer’s last match at ATP tournaments.
“Having a doubles match against Nadal in the next match could be a unique one. We’ve both had ups and downs in our careers and are on the other side of the slopes, creating a good relationship. I think. that this is a great message, not only in tennis and sports but beyond,” Federer said.
Meanwhile, Nadal said: “To be on the court with Federer again is a really special experience for both of us at this stage in our careers.”
Federer and Nadal have faced each other a total of 40 times in their careers, in which the “King of Clay” prevails with 26 victories, with 10 wins out of 14 meetings in the Grand Slam.
At Laver Cup 2018, Federer and Nadal played doubles, winning dramatic 6-4, 1-6 and 10-5 over Sam Querry and Jack Sock, helping the European team win the final championship.
On September 15, Federer announced his retirement on his personal page and said that the Laver Cup was his last ATP tournament. “Of course, I will play more tennis in the future. However, I will not attend the Grand Slam or the ATP Tour anymore. This is a bitter and sweet decision,” Federer wrote.
Laver Cup 2022 takes place during September 23-25 in London, England. Play three singles matches and one doubles match every day. Each win on the first day gets 1 point, the second day 2 points and the third day 3 points. The European team won in all four tournaments.
Before the news of Federer’s retirement after the Laver Cup, tournament ticket prices skyrocketed from a few hundred pounds to 15,000 pounds.
