FA has opened an investigation targeting MU and the fans present at Old Trafford in the 3-1 victory of the “Red Devils” over Everton in the third round of the FA Cup this season. The announcement on the organization’s homepage read: “We stand firmly against all forms of discrimination and we are working to ensure matches are a safe environment for everyone, where gender diversity and challenge hostile behavior both on and off the field.”
The match against Everton at Old Trafford is not the first time “Red Devils” fans have homophobic songs. During MU’s trip to Stamford Bridge last October, coach Erik ten Hag criticized MU fans who chanted songs with such discriminatory messages.
The Dutch strategist confirmed the team will talk to fan groups to resolve the issue. However, the FA also does not rule out the possibility of investigating Everton fans because fans of the Merseyside team are also famous for homophobia in the past.
After the FA Cup match, the MU homepage also raised a message against the lyrics with the meaning of insulting the LGBT community from the stands at Old Trafford. “Sexism, like all other forms of discrimination, has no place in football. Manchester United prides itself on a diverse fan base and we are working to reduce the cases that deserve it. sad like today”, MU’s statement reads.
