According to Senegal Detail Zero, the FBF approached coach Troussier before the country’s friendly match against Mauritania on September 24 to offer a contract. The initial negotiation process of the two sides went quite smoothly and it is highly likely that coach Troussier will accept the invitation to lead the Benin team in the near future.
Benin is currently ranked 91st in the world, a mid-range African team. Benin has never won a continental championship or achieved any impressive achievements. In 2021, the FBF fired coach Michel Dussuyer after the country’s national team failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) and the second qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup.
Under the guidance of interim coach Moussa Latoundji, the Benin team had a bit of prosperity when they won two and drew one at the FIFA Days friendly, against Liberia, Zambia and Congo, respectively. However, until the CAN 2023 qualifiers took place in June, Benin lost both matches against Senegal and Mozambique. In the last friendly match against Mauritania on September 24, Benin lost 0-1.
FBF is working hard to bring back Coach Troussier. They believe that the level of “White Witch” will help the national team overcome difficulties. Mr. Troussier has not had a new job since he parted ways with U19 Vietnam in mid-2021.
Coach Philippe Troussier was born in 1955, has led many African teams such as Ivory Coast, Nigeria, South Africa and Morocco, very knowledgeable about this continent’s football. However, his biggest mark came during his time with Japanese football. The French coach helped Japan win the 2000 Asian Cup, won the Confederations Cup runner-up in 2001 and took Japan to the 2002 World Cup.
