In the Premier League at the moment, Chelsea is 17 points behind the team ranked 4th. They are actually closer to the relegation group than the Top 4. With this momentum, Chelsea will become the first English club to receive a loss of up to 1 billion euros.
This information was analyzed by economist Kieran Maguire, professor and head of the economic portal Price of Football, from the data provided by Chelsea.
Last season, Chelsea only lost 140 million euros (before Boehly took over the team). After that, the American boss had two record shopping periods, investing more than 600 million euros in the market. This number is more than all three previous seasons of Roman Abramovich combined (410.2 million euros). Meanwhile, the amount of money sold by the Blues players is only 67 million euros.
Not stopping, Chelsea has many other expenses that heavily affect the financial structure. The English team paid 56 million euros to the former directors for “contributions related to the transfer of the club”. Particularly, former CEO Marina Granovskaia received 35 million, chairman Bruce Buck and a few other famous names shared the remaining amount.
In terms of not being able to participate in the Champions League, Chelsea has lost a lot of money. In the 2020/21 championship season, they pocketed 120 million euros in UEFA prize money alone. When they reached the 1/8 round, Chelsea had 60 million. Reaching the quarterfinals like now, they have 70-75 million.
Therefore, to avoid the situation of having to sell off the star next summer, Chelsea must try everything to get into the Champions League. They can go through two ways, climbing the Premier League table, or winning the Champions League this season.
