Earlier in the season Carragher made negative comments about Lisandro Martinez, calling him a “problem” for Erik ten Hag. In August 2022, Carragher said that Martinez was too small to play in defense in the Premier League. The former England player said that while a player should never be “judged too soon”, he believes that “his (Lisandro’s) stature” when playing in a back four will be detrimental to his team. Man United’s 2022/23 season. This comment came after the Reds’ 0-4 defeat to Brentford.
With a height of 1.75m, Martinez is one of the smallest midfielders in the Premier League. However, one fan believes that his height is not an obstacle. Instead, this person believes that the Argentina international is the “best defender” in the tournament. Mark Goldbridge, host of the Man United fan channel – United Stand, posted his comments on Twitter, criticizing Carragher’s earlier comments and praising Martinez.
Yesterday Goldbridge wrote: “I really wouldn’t pay much attention to Carragher’s opinion of centre-backs. He told everyone that Martinez would fail for being small. Martinez is currently the best centre-back. league in his first season”.
Carragher immediately countered that statement. The former Liverpool midfielder quoted Goldbridge’s original tweet and wrote: “Harry Maguire & Victor Lindelof in 2019/20 have conceded one less than Martinez and Raphael Varane this season. And this season. There are still 9 matches to go.” The former Liverpool player then ended his statement with a winking emoji.
Besides possibly not believing Martinez is the best centre-back playing in the Premier League right now, Carragher hails Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk as one of the greats. Carragher rushed to Van Dijk’s defense after fans criticized the Netherlands international for his poor performance in last weekend’s draw with Arsenal.
Speaking of Van Dijk’s abilities, Carragher tweeted, “Van Dijk is much better than Vidic. Of course Vidic is a top defender but I’m sure everyone hasn’t forgotten his performance against Fernando Torres. Rio Ferdinand And John Terry has had bad seasons in his career, and so has Van Dijk. No centre-back in the Premier League has made an impact at a team like Van Dijk is doing with Liverpool.”
In a follow-up tweet, Carragher continued to defend his position. The former England player said, “Don’t say he’s just the best centre-back in the league, he’s also the best player alongside Kevin De Bruyne for the last four years. We’ve never talked about centre-backs. The other is the best player before, that shows his level.”
