1. Casemiro
Formerly the captain of the Brazilian team, Casemiro is said to be a candidate to replace Harry Maguire in the summer. Erik ten Hag considered the 31-year-old before choosing Bruno Fernandes.
The Dutch military leader previously praised Casemiro’s leadership ability and considered giving the former Real Madrid star the captain’s armband during the trip to Aston Villa last November. However, Ten Hag believes in Cristiano Ronaldo because CR7 speaks better English than Casemiro.
However, Casemiro is having difficulty in terms of performance so far this season. Therefore, there are doubts about whether he should continue to play, let alone become the club’s captain.

Casemiro was considered to wear the Man Utd captain’s armband in the past.
2. Marcus Rashford
Marcus Rashford graduated from the club’s academy and knows how to demonstrate leadership ability both on and off the field. The striker’s campaign against child hunger helped him win an MBE in 2020. Rashford has been with the Red Devils for 18 years and scored 30 goals for the club last season.
However, like Casemiro, his performances have declined. The England star has only scored once in 13 appearances so far.
3. Lisandro Martinez
One of Ten Hag’s first moves after becoming Man Utd coach last summer was to bring Lisandro Martinez from Ajax. The Argentine defender quickly won the hearts of Man Utd fans.
Martinez was also given the captaincy in August, with former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy telling talkSPORT:
“Who else are you going to give the captaincy to at Man Utd? The most obvious candidate is Martinez, even though he has only been at the club for a year. He looks like a real leader.”
4. Luke Shaw
Left back Luke Shaw is currently Man Utd’s longest serving first team player, after signing from Southampton 9 years ago. Since then, Shaw has made 262 appearances for the club and played under five different managers at Old Trafford.
Shaw has also become a key player for the Red Devils since recovering from a serious leg injury in 2015. However, the 28-year-old has not played since August due to a muscle injury. That problem caused him to be out of action for more than two months and the date for the former Southampton defender’s return is unknown.
5. Harry Maguire

Maguire was stripped of the captaincy in the summer.
Finally, Ten Hag can change his decision by re-trusting Harry Maguire. Having almost left Old Trafford in the summer because of interest from West Ham, this defender has shown resilience to be able to regain his impressive form.
Maguire started all 4 of the club’s most recent matches in all competitions. He also scored the decisive goal against Copenhagen in the Champions League to help his team win 3 important points.
