In the summer of 2023, Karim Benzema left Real Madrid to join Al Ittihad. At the new club, he enjoys a salary of up to 200 million euros per season, with a 2-year contract with an extension for another year.
He and Cristiano Ronaldo became two of the players with the highest income in soccer. However, Benzema’s performance was not as expected. From being a championship candidate, Al Ittihad fell to 7th place after a 2-5 defeat to Al Nassr.
Notably, Benzema locked his social network account after the loss and was said to be missing from the Al Ittihad squad. However, the 36-year-old player is allowed to do so.
“Benzema returned to Madrid because of special circumstances. He asked for three days off and the club agreed,” an Al Ittihad official confirmed to Diario AS. “Karim is a professional and will remain with the team.”
Benzema won 24 titles with Real Madrid, including 4 La Liga championships, 3 Copa del Rey and 5 UEFA Champions League titles. He is the second highest scorer in Real Madrid history, after Ronaldo.
