The Dutchman was heavily interested in Manchester United in the summer and for a while it looked like the Spanish side were willing to sell him. Erik ten Hag wants to reunite with his former player and this transfer story is still being talked about.
Barcelona are in financial difficulty and need to raise funds to rearrange the squad. De Jong was a huge asset that could make them money, but the player wanted to stay at the Nou Camp and the Spanish side made it clear in the end that they would not sell.
Since then, De Jong has performed brilliantly to help Barca top La Liga, Mundo Deportivo page claims that the club’s heads have privately admitted to each other: “Luckily we didn’t sell him.”
The source also added: “He has become more and more aware of what the team is asking for and the coach appreciates him very much.”
Man United’s interest is still so great that they are believed to be likely to return to recruit De Jong as Ten Hag continues to build the squad.
