Last season, Marcus Rashford was the most outstanding player. He helped Manchester United win the home derby against Man City. When they met in round 10 of the Premier League this season, the England international almost disappeared.
Rashford’s form has been a concern for Man United since the beginning of the season, but it has reached its lowest point at this point. Man Utd’s number one star was unable to be effective when the team needed him the most.
In fact, the 25-year-old player is still the leader even when he is not in good form. Man Utd still has reason to believe that Rashford can inspire the whole team to an important victory, although that hope is increasingly fading.
There is no denying that Rashford has reached world class thanks to his outstanding performances last season. However, that is just a story of the past. Rashford’s decision-making has been poor at times this season and he often loses possession.
In Man Utd’s 0-1 loss to Newcastle United in round 14 of the Premier League, Rashford made 11 mistakes in just the first half of the match. Most Man Utd strikers leave behind the image of just jogging, playing superficially and not participating in the ball.
This season, Rashford has only scored two goals in 18 matches – in contrast to last season’s performance. Coach Erik ten Hag still defended Rashford, declaring: “We support Rashford and he will regain his form.” Song, Ten Hag needs to learn from Mikel Arteta to help Rashford return.
Gabriel Magalhaes has been a mainstay in the Arsenal defense since moving from Lille 3 years ago and is currently back in his best form. But in August, amid speculation that he was preparing to move to the Saudi Pro League, Arteta decided to leave Gabriel on the bench for the first three matches of the season.
After a poor defensive performance in the 2-2 draw against Fulham, Arteta returned Gabriel to the starting lineup in the victory over Man United. Since then, he has not missed a single Premier League match.
Arteta explained the removal of Gabriel at the beginning of the season: “In football, the problem is tomorrow. It’s about performance, it’s about how you play, it’s about how you behave and you have to work hard every day, because you know someone is next to you, wants to take your place and is worthy to take your place.
Sometimes you just have to sit down on the bench to realize things and then suddenly you become a much better player.”
Arteta’s decision worked. At this time, Gabriel and William Saliba formed an increasingly solid partnership, helping Arsenal rise to the top of the Premier League as well as in the Champions League.
Ten Hag must understand that Rashford needs to rest. That’s an euphemism, actually the England player needs to be removed from the squad. Rashford needs to reserve a few matches to reflect on himself. When effectiveness no longer exists, Rashford must give up his position to someone more worthy.
If he continues to trust Rashford in the context of low confidence, Ten Hag will destroy this player’s career and plunge Man Utd into deep crisis.
