Tavares is having a fantastic season on loan in France, and scored his fifth goal of the season on Monday night when he scored the opening goal against Montpellier.
Marseille looked like they were headed for a win, but the left-back kicked Arnaud Souquet unnecessarily. The incident led to a small scuffle between the two sides before the referee regained control, but the drama wasn’t over yet.

Tavares will receive a suspended sentence.
Tavares was shown two consecutive yellow cards – one for a foul and the other for involvement in a scuffle – and sent off. However, before he went down the tunnel, VAR intervened and, upon review, the foul was deemed an act that resulted in a direct red card.
His actions almost cost Marseille the whole game, Montpellier got a penalty in injury time, but fortunately for Tavares, they won 2-1.
After the game, Marseille manager Igor Tudor was unimpressed with the Arsenal loanee, saying: “He has lost his mind and will be severely punished. He will learn a lesson for the future.”
