Ajax have confirmed that Maurice Steijn will become the new club manager next season. The 49-year-old strategist signed a 3-year contract with Ajax (until June 2026). This will be the third strategist to lead Ajax since Ten Hag left the club in the summer of 2022.
Alfred Schreuder was the first coach chosen by Ajax to replace Ten Hag, but this strategist was fired in the middle of the season after the Dutch club declined and there were many internal conflicts. The then interim Ajax manager, John Heitinga, also failed to live up to expectations. The home team of Johan Cruyff Arena ended the 2022/23 season empty-handed, even losing their place in the Champions League next season when they finished third in the Dutch league.
Therefore, the Ajax leadership did not continue to put their faith in the former Dutch midfielder and chose Steijn. The coach born in 1973 resonated when helping Sparta Rotterdam become a phenomenon in the 2022/33 Dutch tournament with beautiful gameplay. The task of coach Steijn next season is to help Ajax reclaim the Dutch championship as well as play well in the Europa League.
Ajax has been in crisis since Ten Hag left. Last month, Edwin van der Sar unexpectedly left his role as the club’s chief executive after a disappointing 2022/23 season. The former MU goalkeeper joined Ajax’s leadership team in 2012 and impressed by helping the club perform well on and off the pitch. “Red Devils” can completely recruit Van der Sar in the near future.
