Free James and Chilwell
Chelsea only got 1 shot on target against Wolves after forming a 4-3-3 formation. Lampard has abandoned Potter’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system, in doing so he has limited the two most dangerous players in his squad.
Harry Redknapp pointed to the problem after the game, telling Sky Sports: “I think their squad is perfect for three defenders. They’ve got great full-backs. [Ben] Chillwell and [Reece] James, they have a lot of central defenders.”
James and Chilwell are finally back in full swing after a nightmare spell with injuries, and they pose a big threat in the bottom third of the pitch when positioned at their preferred full-back position. . They can attack from the back and create space for players like Joao Felix and Kai Havertz.
Let Sterling lead the attack
Chelsea currently have only one true striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but he was dropped by Potter from the C1 squad before being sacked. As a result, Felix and Havertz have been prioritized to lead the Blues’ attack, but Raheem Sterling should be trusted when they arrive in Spain.
He is a man of top-flight experience and enjoyed a trophy-laden six-year stint at Manchester City, where he scored 131 goals in 339 games. Sterling has often functioned as a virtual number nine under Pep Guardiola, showing an impressive knack for moving behind defences and shooting confidently.
Make Vinicius Junior shut up
If Chelsea want to have any hope of reaching the semi-finals, they must stop Madrid’s new mainstay: Vinicius Junior. Karim Benzema remains Los Blancos’ top scorer and is in fine form, but it was Vinicius who created the opportunity for the veteran French forward.
He is also the player who breathes life for Real in the final area of the field. The Brazilian is almost unstoppable when it comes to prolific play and has a habit of shining in the biggest matches. This time, Lampard will need an outstanding performance from James if the Blues are to win a positive result at the Bernabeu.
Exploiting Real’s left wing
Real Madrid have been knocked out of the Spanish title race when they lost to Villarreal, but the way they fail will be cause for Carlo Ancelotti to worry. Samuel Chukwueze scored a brace for the visitors. The Nigeria international was a threat throughout the game as he exposed Real’s obvious weaknesses on the left flank.
Nacho, Eduardo Camavinga and David Alaba have all played at left-back with Ferland Mendy absent through injury since the start of the year and none have really played well. Chelsea would be wise to target that wing, James could be very dangerous if given the freedom to attack.
Keeping Kante fit
N’Golo Kante made his first Chelsea appearance in seven months, finally making a full recovery following surgery on a hamstring injury. Chelsea have been lacking in midfield chemistry throughout the 2022/2023 season, but they can still salvage something, especially if Kante can maintain his full fitness.
Chelsea now desperately need Kante to stand firm in the European arena. The Frenchman could be the only one in Lampard’s squad who will instill real fear in the Real ranks right now, and they will lose their tempo if he keeps following Luka Modric, Aurelien Tchouameni.
