Attack and midfield are still the top priorities of Man United, but Erik ten Hag is forced to thoroughly solve the problem of the wooden frame. Last season, David de Gea made many mistakes. Although he still has excellent reflexes, the Spaniard’s footwork is too bad and cannot help Ten Hag develop his play from the defense.
Here are five goalkeepers who have been closely linked with Man United so far…
1. Andre Onana
Andre Onana will be ready to leave this summer as Inter are looking to raise funds through player sales. The 27-year-old impressed in the Champions League final against Man City, with some excellent saves and was especially good with the ball at his feet.
Onana was exactly the kind of goalkeeper Ten Hag wanted in his team when they used to work together well at Ajax. The Dutchman tends to sign players he understands well. Chelsea are also interested in Onana, but The Guardian reports the 27-year-old star will be in favor of a move to Old Trafford.
2. Jordan Pickford
Pickford is not the most interesting name for United, especially when England’s number 1 goalkeeper regularly makes the same mistake when faced with simple shots like De Gea.
But the difference is that Pickford is very confident in his possession and excellent distribution. He has more than enough talent to make excellent saves, as he did to keep Everton out of relegation, and assert himself in England’s biggest playing fields.
3. David Raya
Brentford backstop David Raya is expected to leave the club this summer after refusing to sign a new contract that expires in the summer of 2024.
Raya actually pushed De Gea out of the Spanish national team thanks to his superior ball handling ability. To have him, Man United will have to compete fiercely with Tottenham.
4. Diogo Costa
Costa is Porto’s highly regarded goalkeeper. He is seen as a potential target for Man United. The Portuguese goalkeeper kept 16 clean sheets last season and was also praised for his excellent ball handling at foot.
However, recently when asked about his future in the face of rumors related to the Red Devils, Costa showed little interest: “It’s the internet. It’s a pleasure and an honor to play for the club I love. My favorite. They say whatever they say, nothing specific. I have a contract with Porto until 2027 and I hope to stay here, wait and see.”
5. Bart Verbruggen
MEN Sport reported in early May that United were interested in Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. Verbruggen, 20, was introduced to Anderlecht by Vincent Kompany at the age of 18 two years ago and has made 31 appearances for the Belgian club.
The Dutchman was called up to the Netherlands squad last month and was substituted in the Euro qualifying win over Gibraltar.
